British Columbia is one of the most seismically active regions in Canada. Each year, thousands of small earthquakes occur, many of which are felt by residents. While most are low in magnitude, even moderate quakes can result in significant disruption, particularly in vulnerable communities. The Geological Survey of Canada records over 2,500 earthquakes annually in Western Canada, with approximately 400 occurring in southwestern BC alone. While many are minor, the potential for a significant seismic event poses a serious risk to communities.

Economic & Community Impacts

A large earthquake can cause severe structural damage, interrupt transportation corridors, trigger landslides, and result in fires and power outages. The economic ripple effect can include prolonged business closures, reduced investor confidence, and long-term infrastructure rebuilding costs, often in the billions. Historical data indicate earthquakes are capable of causing structural damage in the region every decade or so.
