Types of Disasters
WILDFIRES

BC’s wildfire seasons are growing more severe and frequent due to changing climate conditions. Forested regions in the Interior, the North, and even suburban areas are increasingly vulnerable. The 2023 season was BC’s worst on record, with over 2.8 million hectares burned. This resulted in over $720 million in insurance losses, making it the costliest insured event ever record in the province and the tenth costliest in Canadian history at that time. This included significant damage in the Okanagan and Shuswap.

Economic & Community Impacts

Wildfires pose direct threats to homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure. Indirect impacts include lost tourism revenue, disrupted supply chains, increased insurance costs, and long-term health effects from smoke exposure.

Beyond the immediate destruction, wildfires trigger a cascade of indirect economic consequences. The tourism sector, a vital part of BC’s economy, suffers significantly due to travel advisories, park closures, and the negative perception of smoke-filled landscapes.

Businesses face disruptions to their supply chains as transportation routes are blocked or become hazardous. The long-term health effects of prolonged smoke exposure place a burden on the healthcare system and reduce productivity within communities. Moreover, the psychological toll on residents who have been displaced or live under the constant threat of fire can have lasting impacts on community cohesion and mental health.

Preparedness & Resources

The FireSmart BC program equips communities with tools to reduce wildfire risks — from brush clearance and vegetation management to building retrofits. These resources support local governments, emergency planners, and residents alike. By investing in and actively participating in FireSmart initiatives, we can collectively reduce the vulnerability of our homes, infrastructure, and the natural environment, ultimately fostering safer and more resilient communities across British Columbia. The program represents a vital investment in preventing future losses and protecting the long-term well-being of our province.
