Preparedness

Preparedness focuses on planning, training, and resource allocation to ensure communities can respond effectively when a disaster occurs. This includes emergency plans, communication systems, evacuation routes, and community education.

Why It Matters in BC

Disasters in BC are often fast-moving and unpredictable. The 2021 atmospheric rivers and the 2023 wildfire season demonstrated how rapidly conditions can deteriorate. Well-prepared communities were able to evacuate more efficiently, protect businesses, and reduce response times.

What Communities Can Do

  • Develop or update community emergency plans
  • Establish business continuity and economic recovery strategies
  • Run drills and tabletop exercises (e.g., ShakeOut BC)
  • Create evacuation route signage and emergency communications plans
  • Encourage personal preparedness among residents
